2016 Edition (XII). Old Gardens, New Parks. Felipe VI Forestry Park (Valdebebas Forestry Park)

As part of the 12th edition of the lecture series organized by Casa Encendida in Madrid, Gregorio Prieto (Prointec) and Marita Centenera (Madrid City Hall) gave their views on the 500 Ha. Forestry Park in the heart of the new urban development of Valdebebas, between the neighborhood of Sanchinarro and Terminal 4 of the Madrid Barajas airport.

Tuesday, 1 de March de 2016

Gregorio Prieto reviewed the origin of the park from its first design stages as well as describing the master plan, representing the shadow of a tree, and the main characteristics of the four main zones: the canopy, the trunk, the river and drover path and the entry plazas.

Marita Centenera focused her talk on the functioning of the park, the opportunities and services it offers and future plans.

She explained the evolution of the area, and how the Valdebebas Property Board assigned funds to execute the park at the same time as the urbanization infrastructure, so that the park was in place before the buildings. She also underlined the success of this approach in the urban area, where all the parks and the street trees were planted before the first buildings were built. When the first residents moved to Valdebebas all the green areas were established and the trees totally formed.

From 2010 to 2014 the maintenance of the park was awarded to Inditec that maintained and made improvements to the park before it was opened to the public. During this period the plant cover was improved, slope stabilization was conducted with hydro seeding and geotextile installation. Some of the more relevant areas were naturalized such as the streambeds. The irrigation system was improved to make a more efficient use of recycled water and urban furniture and play areas were installed.

A special emphasis was made on the fauna that is beginning to appear in the park, the numerous species of birds and small mammals.

Other site improvements that have been made are: a fixed fire brigade in the summer months to prevent forest fires, a follow up of the forested areas, pest control and the creation of flower meadows in collaboration with a British company.

As for the future of the park, some new improvements will be the creation of a municipal nursery or a composting plant, the improvement of the Valdebebas streambed and the connection to the future agro urban park yet to be constructed.

She also informed of the recent services required of a specialized company to inform on possible future uses and the necessary services for the residents and visitors that visit the park to make it a reference among the large parks in the city of Madrid.

The event closed with an invitation to all present to join a guided tour to observe the park first hand and to visit the areas that had been discussed.
